Introducing my newest NaNoWriMo project

*Takes a deep sigh* I may regret this choice.

I’m not even going to bother telling you about NaNoWriMo because if you know me you know I lack sleep, have too many projects to handle, and against my better judgement I always always participate in Nano.

So I read this little questionnaire on Merie’s blog and thought there was no better way to throw my novel to the gaters to be picked apart.

Without further ado I present,

The medieval fantasy novel with Japanese elements

A mouthful, I know.

#1: What first sparked the idea for this novel?

It’s a long story, but basically two-ish years ago I decided to write a novel with some ninja. I worked on it for maybe two thirds of a year before giving up on it and started to work on my current WIP Chase.

But I felt like all my hard work with researching the ninja and such was going to waste. So I decided to write a new book with the ninja. But I also love the medieval books and movies, so I wanted a more medieval feel with the ninja.

But I also wanted to write some fantasy, thus the myths, folklore, and mystical creatures.

#2: Share a blurb!

I don’t actually have a blurb yet. I don’t even have a title. I can share some key points though.

  • Think Caraval mixed with Robin Hood mixed with Melanie Dickerson mixed with The Story Peddler
  • Hana (my MC) is an Asian princess and her sister Rin goes missing
  • Hana meets some ninja along the way
  • There is a love triangle >:)
  • Most of the legends about the ninja are true in this novel
  • It may possibly become a two book series

#3: Where does the story take place? What are some of your favorite aspects of the setting?

The story takes place in a fictional world I’m in the process of creating. It’s called The Land of the Sinking Sun.

My favorite thing about this world is how I’m planning to base it off of Japan. So the land is relatively the same size and shape and the landmarks are in the same place, but I rename places and mold them to suit my needs.

#4: Tell us about your protagonist(s).

Hana is the most protective selfless little bean I have ever written. The only thing she wants is to please everyone and to protect them from things that don’t even exist.

Hana can be a little overprotective but she thinks she’s doing the right thing. She also dreams up fantasies for herself, but then tells herself it’ll never happen.

Then there’s Takashi. I haven’t fully developed his character yet, but Takashi is very emotional and soft-spoken. He wants to remember everything and loves to stop and smell the figurative roses.

#5: Who (or what) is your antagonist?

I really should have been more prepared before answering these questions. I don’t want to reveal anything though so you’ll have to wait.

#6: What excites you the most about this novel?

Um…. just how different it is compared to Chase. And maybe how I love reading medieval books but never has read a book similar to this one.

Also the characters and how much they change throughout the progression of this novel.

#7: Is this a standalone? series? something else?

I’m planning for this to be a book and its sequel, but no promises.

#8: Are you plotting? pantsing? plantsing?

I’m going through my typical plotting routine, so I’m plotting all the way. An uber-organized forgetful person like me would never dream of pantsing.

#9: Name a few things that make this story unique.

Read all the previous questions and answers with question nine in mind.

#10: Share a fun “extra” of the story (a song or full playlist, some aesthetics, a collage, a Pinterest board, a map you’ve made, a special theme you’re going to incorporate, ANYTHING you want to share!).

I don’t have a playlist yet but you bet that I will share it sometime soon. But thankfully it isn’t all in vain because I have some aesthetics and pictures of the characters that I can share.

Looks pretty intriguing, eh?

The guy to your left is Takashi and the girl to the right is Hana.

These two are kinda side characters, but they’re my favorite side characters so they get to featured.

The black girl is Aisha and the cowardly or curious prince is Walter. You can’t tell if he’s hiding and watching something, or if he’s spying curiously onn people. Hm… it shall forever remain a mystery.

That’s all I got for your this week. Next week I promise it won’t be anything book related.

Have a great day everyone and feel free to ramble about you NaNo projects in the comments below. I’d love to hear about them.

  1. How interestinnnnngggg

Carlye as much as I adore the idea of this novel I will forever resent you for putting THAT. into it.

I mean do what you wish, Carlye, but just know that Merie will get back on you for it. Somehow. I actually don’t know. What was I talking about again?

The characters seem intriguing. The world seems intriguing… I’m intrigued and I might even forgive you for the love triangle.

I mean I love the Weaver Trilogy, so I assume you’ll be smart like Lindsay Franklin and not make the love triangle too much of a pain?? You’ve heard all our woes about KotLC so I know you will do it well… I might even come to tolerate this triangle…

    I trust you, Carlye. 😆😆😆

    1. Thank you Merie, I’m pretty excited for this project as well.
Hopefully you’ll forgive me when you find out it’s more of a love hectagon than triangle. And yes, I can remember the long paragraphs concerning the future of our beloved elevs.
I’ve only read the first book in the Weaver Trilogy, so I don’t know a whole lot about the love triangle. And when I said Weaver Trilogy I meant more of the bandit and magic part than the romance.
I’m glad to know you place your trust on semi-reliable people.

      1. You’re already beat it before so I’m confident in you! I once attempted it in grade school but didn’t have enough motivation to finish … waiting for that motivation to hit me some day 🙂

    1. Glad to know you’re here to motivate me. And I don’t know how everyone has the time to do everything, I’m running on fumes and writing things at midnight.
There’s nothing wrong with an unhealthy amount of caffeine if you get at least part of your novel done. And you won’t worry alone, we can do it together.
